Dinky is the quiet waif of Clyde Ohio, the setting for the film "Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael", my favourite film of all time (yes, even better than Star Wars). I saw this film first when I was 14, and for about four months watched it three times a day after I returned from school in order to feel better about being the typical social outcast and general classroom weird person. I was in love, and even once pretended to my friends that Dinky was actually my real life best friend by taking a photograph of my television and showing off as evidence. The ploy even worked for a few days : )
In the film Dinky, a complete sociophobe who has spent most of her life since the 7th grade either in 'special schools' for socially inappropriate children or alone and scowling at the mainstream population of her quiet American town, finds out the story behind the 'legendary' fomer local girl Roxy Carmichael (who is soon to make a celebrated return) and gradually becomes convinced that she is this enigmatic woman's daughter. The plot is a masterpiece, depicting all the subtle faces of the female psyche and the complete loss man finds himself at when faced with them. On the surface, Dinky (played by Winona Ryder - easily her most involved and characterful work to date) stands at the centre of a simple (perhaps even twee) story of alienation, hope and tragic coincidence, but unbeknonwst to her the interactions she precipitates between herself and the supporting characters bring about great changes for the better in the lives of many other good people, closing with a completeness that convinces one of the fact that the writer of this tale truly knew what it is like to be someone who 'just doesn't fit', and didn't (as is the case in most films following similar characters) simply aim to sell Dinky to those who might identify with her plight.
Of course, despite the fantastic performance of Ryder and her supporting cast (esp. Jeff Daniels) and a deeply moving storyline, the film bombed at the Box Office. However, thanks to a re-release and numerous broadcasts of the movie on graveyard shift television schedules, "Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael" is slowly becoming one of the most sought after cult teen movies of the 1990's, and Dinky Bossetti an icon/idol for those young people who wear black but aren't 'Goth', rebel but aren't aggressive, and isolate themselves from their schoolmates but have no recollection of how they did so.
